Generally Speaking Empty Generally Speaking

Generally speaking and loosely topical, I can't understand why parents take very young children on holiday to foreign lands.  It can't be much fun for the kids!

You need to be careful taking children to the beach considering unfamiliar marine life, natural tidal variance and above all else the typical criminal element to be found anywhere touristic.  Then there is the resort swimming pool but what's the attraction there for a very young child - a slice of pizza, a soggy chip and a warm pepsi?  Nothing that can't be got back home!

Sightseeing is yet another aspect of the childish boredom thresh hold, what fun is that for a very young child, being carted around by mummy and daddy to look at buildings and other things they just don't understand or want to stare at?

When we were kids we would spend holidays in a caravan or tent where you can wallow in mud to the heart's content.  Surely that's preferable for kids than a stuffy hotel room or places you can't enjoy for one reason or another.  Making your own soggy chips is more of an adventure than serving up on a waiter.

When you have children normality is on hold until they are at least 60 years of age.  No holidays in the sun or cruises down the Nile or mountain treks on the back of a Dalai Lama in the Himalayas.  Nope, you give up on life forever!

Think about it, if not for the chosen holiday destination and style, Madeleine McCann would have lived and grown to be a young woman starting out on her own life.  Of course accidents can happen anywhere at any time and do but it's less likely under the constant watchful eye of the parent or guardian than when left in a strange bedroom in unfamiliar surrounds along with you younger brother and sister.  It's easy to be wise after the event but a darn sight easier to avoid risks.

Okay so dump the children in care facilities every day but is it really that much fun for the parent?  You're still left with the obligatory childcare and worries expected of a parent or guardian.

Why do it?
